As you may have seen in the news, the U.S. government is currently shut down, and as of 10/8 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially ceased most operations. Roughly half of IRS employees have been furloughed, and many key departments—including Appeals, Taxpayer Assistance, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), and other administrative units—are temporarily closed with very few staff remaining.

At this time, the Practitioner Priority Line and the Automated Collection System (ACS) appear to remain operational. (ACS handles automated collection notices, levies, installment agreements, and hardship requests.)

Despite the shutdown, tax obligations remain in full effect. While cases involving Revenue Officers, Examiners, and Appeals Officers are likely paused, it is wise to continue meeting any deadlines previously set. When the government reopens, the IRS typically does not extend deadlines, and field collection activity resumes quickly.

The Frost Law team is actively monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
