Job Requirements

We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Legal Assistant to support our Tax Department. This in-office position is based in our newly established Houston, Texas office. This role will provide direct administrative and case support to attorneys handling a variety of tax matters, including tax planning, controversy, compliance, transactional issues, and tax litigation. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit, and proofread correspondence, memoranda, and legal documents.
  • Organize and maintain both electronic and physical client files to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
  • Assist with preparation and filing of documents with courts, the IRS, and state agencies.
  • Track case deadlines, manage task lists, and ensure timely follow-up.
  • Communicate with clients to schedule meetings and obtain necessary information or documentation.
  • Support attorneys with administrative tasks related to tax advisory, controversy, and compliance matters.
  • Coordinate with other legal assistants and paralegals across departments to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Prepare and file petitions, motions, and pleadings with the U.S. Tax Court, federal district courts, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
  • Assist attorneys in organizing and managing litigation files, including trial exhibits, discovery documents, and correspondence with opposing counsel.
  • Monitor and track litigation deadlines, including Tax Court calendars, response deadlines, and hearing dates.
  • Support preparation for Tax Court trials and hearings, including assembling stipulated facts, exhibit binders, and witness materials.
  • Coordinate with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel and other government agencies on procedural matters related to active disputes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience as a legal assistant, preferably in a tax, corporate, or litigation practice.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and document management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently while supporting multiple attorneys.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and commitment to client service.
  • Prior experience with Tax Court or federal court filings is a plus.
