The IRS sends out a CP2000 Notice when they find an inconsistency while reviewing your tax returns. If your income or payment information does not match the information the IRS has on file, you will receive a CP2000 Notice.
The CP2000 Notice will explain the discrepancies that were found and how it could impact your tax return. The IRS also includes a Response form with the notice that needs to be filled out and returned to the IRS. Taxpayers are asked to either agree or disagree with what is stated in the notice and return the form to the IRS.
You should also fill out Section 3 on the Response form which authorizes someone else to contact the IRS regarding your CP2000 Notice. You can also fill out Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative to authorize someone else to contact the IRS on your behalf.
While we always suggest that you contact your tax professional when dealing with these matters; in the event that you do agree to the notice you can pay the full amount with your Response form. The IRS also provides installment plans if you cannot pay the full amount.
If you disagree with the notice, then it is your job to prove your case. This includes providing an explanation of your position and providing sufficient evidence or documentation.
Failure to respond to the initial notice or provide sufficient documentation to support your disagreement will result in a Statutory Notice of Deficiency to be sent.
