Background & History

Terry brings a distinguished career in trust and estate planning to the firm’s estate practice group. As a director, his experience working with high-net-worth clients in developing and implementing sophisticated estate planning techniques adds to the bench of attorneys working with clients. Terry is familiar with GRATs, CLATs, CRUTs, FLLCs, Conservation Easements, QPRTs, Dynasty Trusts, Domestic Asset Protection Trusts, Buy-Sell Agreements, ILITs, International Estate Planning, Asset Protection including Offshore Trusts, Business Succession Planning, and IDGTs. He knows of complex domestic and international estate planning, including asset protection. 

Terry is a Professor of Law at the Syracuse University College of Law whose areas of instruction include estate planning, estate, and gift taxation, wills and trusts, and property.  A trained nuclear engineer, he formerly served as an advisor to the United States Department of Energy and the Nuclear Energy Institute.

After graduating with a law degree in nuclear regulatory law, Terry took an extra course in gift and estate tax at Georgetown and found his love for estate planning. He proceeded to get his L.L. M in tax. Terry’s career included being an attorney at Deloitte & Touché national tax office in DC and was employed by Covington & Burley.

Terry received his Juris Doctor and his LL.M in Taxation from Georgetown University School of Law, cum laude. He went to Mississippi State University as a Harry S. Truman Memorial Scholar receiving a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, summa cum laude. He received his M.S. in Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Terry loves teaching and has been doing so for the past 18 years. In his free time, he enjoys sailing a large catamaran and taking friends on trips to various islands.
