People often ask me why I dedicated my career to the practice of estate planning. The short answer is it was personal.
What compelled me to pursue estate law was witnessing my own family fail miserably at estate planning. My paternal grandmother died in1985, and her estate went mostly to my aunt (through a joint account). My father received little. My grandmother had left me $10,000, which quickly dwindled down to $7,553 once I paid my share of the tax and expenses. This was an eye-opening experience and sparked my interest in estate law. Sadly, it would not be my last personal experience with the chaos and pain caused by alack of planning.
My mother passed in 1991. She had left my older sister in charge of her estate, however, I wound up doing the work because I was the lawyer. My mother and her then boyfriend had some screwy deal regarding her home, so he got the house. Despite having divorced many years prior, my mother and father still owned stock together, so I had to deal with my father on that issue. My sister was the sole beneficiary of some annuities and a pension. My brother and I received nothing. Another eye opener!
Soon after, my father died and left everything to his second wife. While she promised the kids that should our father die before her, she would leave personal items etc. to us, she never did.
After working for the Washington, D.C. government, I worked in financial planning and spent a few years practicing tax, bankruptcy, and some estate law. I had gained valuable experience working for firms that dabbled in estate law, however, it was not their sole practice. My personal experiences had left a mark and I continued to be drawn exclusively to estate planning and to private practice. And so it began…
